Calculator to measure the cardiovascular risk in diabetics.

Funding for detection programs

The most common cause of ill health in individuals with type 2 diabetes is cardiovascular disease. Reliable tools are needed to help physicians to advise their patients about their level of risk of serious cardiovascular events and on the lifestyle and therapeutic measures needed to reduce this risk.

The ADVANCE risk engine is a cardiovascular risk calculator that specifically developed for people with type 2 diabetes. It has been developed using the data for participants in the ADVANCE trial without any history of cardiovascular disease at their enrolment into the study. The inclusion in this trial of participants from many countries has provided the opportunity to account for the substantial variation in the care of diabetes and cardiovascular disease around the world. Moreover the complexity of the relationship between chronic hyperglycaemia and cardiovascular risk has been more fully addressed.

The ADVANCE risk equation is based on 10 risk factors commonly assessed in routine clinical practice. In its most sophisticated form, an electronic version of the ADVANCE tool is available on this website. Risk scoring tables, handheld calculator and other downloadable tools are available.

The ADVANCE risk engine provides an estimate of the 4-year probability of major cardiovascular event that includes cardiovascular death, non fatal myocardial infarction and non fatal stroke. Full details of the equation have been published.
